How ChatGPT adoption has expanded

OpenAI’s June 2026 Signals report describes how ChatGPT usage changed over time, based on aggregated activity from individual plans. The company reports that users in its sample sent more messages and tried a wider range of tasks as they continued using the product.

What the report found

For users who were active six months after joining, OpenAI says daily message volume was 50% higher than in their first month, while the number of distinct capabilities they had tried had doubled. The report also describes rising adoption across regions, with the fastest relative growth in Africa and Asia since July 2023.

These are measures of product use, not a count of all people who use AI or proof that usage improved outcomes. OpenAI says its longitudinal analysis used a 0.1% sample of accounts created from October 15, 2025 through May 1, 2026, with activity measured through May 31. It excludes people under 18, banned accounts, and users inactive for the first 28 days. Some demographic analysis infers name patterns and should not be read as a direct measure of users’ gender.

How to interpret it

The report suggests that engagement can deepen after sign-up and that adoption differs by region. Because the data comes from OpenAI’s own platform and methodology, it cannot independently explain why adoption changed or represent users of other AI products. Independent research would be needed for broader comparisons.
